For European officials hoping that winter weather, high seas, and cold Mediterranean water would stanch the flood of Syrian refugees seeking political amnesty in Europe, the news is not good: they’re not to be denied. Worsening conditions in Syria along with fears that Europe will somehow find a way to slam the door shut on refugees seem to have motivate those willing to brave cold water and high seas. Early this week the number of refugees arriving in Greece from Turkey this year surpassed half a million.
